Msi b550 tomahawk не стартует
When I built this computer a month ago, I struggled with the same/similar problem. Somehow managed to get it to run fine, for about a month, and now it's back down to a paperweight status.
Ryzen 7 3700
Ballistix 3000 CL15 DDR4
GTX 1060 (gainward, I think?)
Seasonic 650W Platinum
A couple of SSDs - unplugged for now to save confusion.
Basically I see the LED boot sequence, but things get stuck on the BOOT LED. At no point does my screen ever switch on. I've checked input source. And yes it's connected to the GPU and not the MOBO DP port. Also - GPU is powered.
Everything ran perfectly for a month. This morning I had the bright idea of trying to flash the BIOS, so jumped into the BIOS, clicked on M-FLASH, and bingo, black screen. Has been black ever since. Tried rebooting numerous times. Nothing. Then tried updating BIOS via USB. The process seems to run fine : 8 slow red flashes, 5min of fast flashes, and a full reboot of the PC (sounds fine, right?). Tried my initial "working" BIOS, flashed that ; then tried the latest one again. Tried clearing CMOS before, and after flashes. Nothing.
After the flashing and initial self reboot, all LEDs are off, but no screen. As soon as I kill power and reboot, back to the BOOT LED showing. Regardless, never a single time does my screen switch on.
I disconnected all "parasite" things : USB devices, RJ45, SATA drives. It's just bare essentials. Tried throwing mouse and keyboard on alternative USB ports.
I do not believe it to be a hardware issue, as everything was working flawlessly for a month. Previous hardware (except CPU - which is new) was also being used in another setup, and all ran fine fine. Also, PC was untouched - what provoked that second occurrence of "black screen of death" was simply clicking on "M-FLASH" in the bios. So that leaves me with a B550 issue, BIOS issue/glitch, or some weird compatibility issue that I somehow had managed to step aside until now? Wish I had other hardware to test, but I don't. I'm pretty disappointed right now, previous MSI gear had been flawless, but I'm off to a bad start on the B550 MAG.
Any ideas on how to proceed?
Many thanks for your insight.

if you Know what your Last working BIOS version was Download it and rename the E7C91AMS.Axx File to msi.rom and put it on a USB Drive and put it in the USB Port surrounded by a grey outline and press the Flash BIOS Button Next to it.

Hi
Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately I've already tried that, flashing my previous version of the bios doesn't seem to be helping in any way. Same problem.

It seems you are using the DP connection from your vga card. Have you tried HDMI instead?
I know it seems irrelevant but I had similar problems with the B550 Tomahawk and a 3600. Using HDMI i could boot normally, using DP i had 3 beeps, the boot led on and black screen. Then, using the reset button I could boot to windows after a minute or two, but no initial Bios screens and no response (and no boot at all) if i hit del, F1, F2 etc buttons.
Just try the HDMI and see if that fixes it.

It is me or has there been a lot of screen problems with display port output, mainly on 10 series cards lately? I should also note that the quality of your display port cable can impact things.

If I'm right, cable quality or card series is not the issue here. It's Msi bios/agesa related and relatively hardware independent.

Well well well. I'm quite astonished. HDMI got the thing working again. Then had to switch bios back to CSM (W10 wasn't installed in UEFI), but instantly with an HDMI cable screen popped back on upon boot. Many thanks.
Now, if it's MSI BIOS/AGESA related, does this mean that future BIOS releases may fix the issue? Or is this a hardware issue? i.e. should I sent this mobo back to get it changed under warranty, or will I be getting exactly the same problem with another one?
It's weird my PC somehow worked for a month on the DP. Now that it is running in HDMI, can I revert back to DP or will this mess everything up again?
I'm glad to have found a way around the problem, but still concerned about the root cause. My GPU has 3 DPs, one HDMI. I'm not entirely happy about having to use the HDMI.
I had indeed come across similar issue on B450 models, and quite frankly am quite disappointed MSI haven't fixed this issue (if the issue is indeed within their BIOS or hardware).
Many thanks again for your help.

It is a bios support for that card over dp issue, whether msi fix it depends. They have for other boards. Have you reported it to them?

Well I've sent them a request for support, pretty much identical description, and their response was to send the mobo back to the store I bought it from for a warranty procedure.
I'll report back to them with the new elements.
But basically, if I upgrade GPU to a more modern and compatible one, or already reported/fixed, that means the issue will disappear? (Any excuse for a GPU upgrade. I'll ask MSI if they can give me a good price on a 2070 or 3070 for my troubles
Thank you again for your help - much appreciated.

I wouldn't buy a new card just yet. The 1060 should be supported. Msi support is hit and miss depending on who you get to talk to but i know others have had the same issue as you. I would also check your display port cable is certified, there are a lot of bad cables out there.

Guys, read this thread.
It was also reported that the newest Bios for the B550 Bazooka fixed the issue, but I don't have any B550 mobo in my hands anymore to test.
And, as laurence1211 said, it's not the card's fault and you shouldn't change card. It is also cable independent, I tested with more than 6 different DP cables, all good quality, 2 of them brand new with no change in behavior.

Don't run to change anything just yet my friend. I believe it is just bios maturity issues and/or combination of chipset and 3000 series cpus that produces this bug. It should be fixable.

I do believe it to be a firmware issue but display port cables can cause problems as well so its just something to bare in mind.

Great thank you all for your input. I'll stick with the board then, and not bother sending it for warranty exchange if it's a firmware issue.
I am running the very latest BIOS version, so sadly in my case on the MAG Tomahawk things are not fixed.
I'll try reconnecting the DP tomorrow, and reboot and see if it works again, out of curiosity. Now I know I have HDMI as a backup. No idea what brand the DP cable is, but it came with a decent WQHD hi frequency screen, so intuitively didn't sound like it could be problematic, but who knows. I've seen weird things in the past happen from cables.
Thank you again all for your help and ideas.

The behavior I have experienced with DP is that it would eventually boot into windows and display normally thereafter.
But you are denied Bios access, you see only black screen until it boots windows and if you press any F key or Del, then it gets into Bios i suppose but you can't see it.
So it's only Hdmi for Bios access for the time being. Annoying but livable with.
And of course you should use good quality cables, and keep a spare one to check things out. I should know, I have at least 6!

I've reverted back to DP, seems to be working. That would explain a lot of things. Mystery is how I got to the BIOS in the first place, through DP! It's only when I clicked on M-FLASH (to get to that menu - before even flashing anything) that I got myself back into the DP issue. Of course, by flashing the BIOS, I reset settings, and the UEFI boot (which isn't UEFI on my PC), hence a permanent lock up in the BIOS.
I've no idea how, in the first place, I had managed to overcome that DP issue. I'm sure as hell I hadn't connected through HDMI.
Glad that things are working again. I'll keep an eye out for new BIOS versions, contact MSI with card details, and see if we can improve things permanently (and for other customers).
Many thanks for all your help.

I have the same problem, except I have some more.
1. issue: SATA (solved)
First of all, when I installed Win10, I wasn't able to boot.
The source of the problem was a second SATA SSD, which was NOT plugged to the Mobo during the installation, just right after it was done (to have some driver files).
It was connected to on one of the SATA ports, which might was internally joint to the M.2 line. That made the system crash. Black screen, no booting.
Once Iplugged to the "wrong" port, it never worked again, and I must reinstad the OP system. After reinstall I plugged to a different port and its worked.
So lets say this issue have already solved.
2. issue: USB (partially solved)
I use my display as a USB HUB. The wired mice and key connected to the display, and the display is connected to the MoBo USB port.
In my previous config it worked fine with a USB C - USB A cable.
But with this config it only run if I plug it into a USB 2.0 port on the front of the cabinet and not working on any other 3.0 or 2.0 port on the front or on the back.
The display and the cable perfectly working with my laptop, which I also use.
There are one other way which work, to use a USB C - USB C cable. Fortunately the MoBo has one USB C connector.
The problem is that I'd liked to use the monitor with the PC and a laptop alternately. And non of these solutions supports these requirement.
The laptop has no USB C, and I don't want to plug the display into the front connector of the PC's cabinet. I guess it is understandable.
3. issue: DP (not solved yet)
If my display connected to the PC, it is starting 3 beeps, but fortunatelly it starting the booting soon. But I'm not able to go into the BIOS.
With HDMI connector it boots perfectly.
But sadly, it only running with 85Hz insted of 100Hz.
And I also would like to use the HDMI connector to feed the home cinema system.
Do you have solution to the 2. or 3. issue?
Thank you in advance!
